Benefits

Applying for Canadian visas of this kind constitutes a route to settlement in Canada, and accordingly, confers permanent residence status upon successful applicants.

No time restrictions are placed upon a business visa for this route as is the case with temporary immigration services such as the Canadian visit visa.

As permanent residents, candidates will receive the same rights and privileges as Canadian citizens with the exception of the right to vote.

Beyond permanent residency, after three years in Canada, applicants may be able to pursue a grant of Canadian citizenship.

Eligibility Criteria

In Canada, immigration applications of this type do not require a minimum net worth to be demonstrated. However, it is necessary to satisfy an entry clearance officer that you have sufficient capital to settle yourself and your family and to carry out your proposal.

Migration to Canada for the purpose of self-employment requires applicants to be able to contribute to cultural or athletic activities or to purchase and manage a farm.

Candidates may only apply for one type of Canadian business immigration service. Once an application has been made, it is not permitted to switch to an alternative route.

Points System

Applying for a Canadian self employed visa requires a candidate to achieve the minimum pass mark on a points based skills assessment.

Candidates are assessed according to their business experience, educational achievements, age and language proficiency, and must achieve a score of 35 or more points.

Business Experience

Business experience gained in the five years directly prior to an application being submitted is worth between 20 and 35 points.

Education

In Canada, visa applications of this kind receive 5-25 points for a candidate's level of education. Points are awarded based on an applicant's highest academic qualification and the amount of time spent in education.

Why Self Employed Visa to Canada

If you can make enough money to support yourself and your family (at least 1-2 years initial stage) by being self employed and looking to move to Canada you may qualify for immigration under the Canadian Self Employed Immigration program. Under the Canadian Self Employed Immigration program, qualified applicants can receive a Canadian Self Employed visa to come to Canada to live and work.

The Canadian Self Employed Immigration program is part of the Canadian Business Immigration program, along with the Canadian Investor program and the Canadian Entrepreneur Immigrant program. As a business visa, the Self Employed Visa provides qualifying applicants with permanent residency upon approval for the visa. And if you are interested in becoming a citizen of Canada it only takes three years as a permanent resident to qualify you for application for Canadian citizenship.

Like the other business visas, the Self Employed Visa does not impose any limitations on you in regards to requiring you to have a specific offer of employment. In fact, the Self Employed Visa allows you to set up your business anywhere you would like to in the country.

Unlike the other business visas, you do not have to show proof of a minimum amount of net worth for the Self Employed Visa. However, you do have to show that you have access to a sufficient amount of liquid capital that you can use to settle yourself in Canada and use to start up whatever type of business that you have planned on starting in Canada. An additional requirement that must be met for the Self Employed Visa is that you must be able to contribute to some athletic or cultural activities or be able and willing to purchase and manage a farm in Canada.

If you are applying for immigration under the Canadian Self Employed Immigration program you should be prepared to take a skills assessment where point values are assigned to your answers. This program is similar to that of the other business visas, the Canadian Skilled Worker visa program and the United Kingdom's Highly Skilled Migrant program. In order to qualify under the skills assessment, all applicants must meet the minimum threshold and obtain a passing mark of at least 35.

Items that will be questioned and given a point value on the skills assessment are your business experience, your educational background and level achieved your proficiency in the English and French languages, your age and your level of perceived adaptability to life in Canada. If you are making a joint application with a spouse or partner you are also give points based on their education level. You are given bonus points if you have studied in Canada, worked in Canada or have family members currently living in Canada.

If approved for the Self Employed Visa you will be able to bring over a spouse or partner and any dependant children under the age of 22 to Canada with you.
